I’ve spent the majority of my life around public education in some way, either as student or worker. I’m considering going back to teach next year because the need is so dire, and never in my life have I seen anything like it. It appears to be a nationwide crisis, but who among us wouldn’t have seen that coming? Here I have compiled a list with links of teachers who have died suddenly this year without explanation, but this list is by no means exhaustive as demonstrated by Dr. William Makis who has documented more with greater focus on his Substack.

SOLON, Ohio — Crystal Cespedes, a science teacher at Solon High School, died unexpectedly Thursday (April 27 [2023]), according to an email sent by the school district to families and staff.

The obituary posted Monday (May 1) by the Kindrich-McHugh-Steinbauer Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements, indicated that Cespedes died in her sleep. She was 40.

A Denver-area high school closed this week after two of its teachers died – at least one due to symptoms consistent with bacterial meningitis.

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) — Students in the Albert Gallatin Area School District in Uniontown are being dismissed early Tuesday due to the death of a well-known teacher, school officials said.

The teacher’s name has not yet been released.

A note to families on the district Facebook page said, “Due to unforeseen circumstances regarding a staff member, we will be dismissing ALL students in the district.”

Lewiston Middle School canceled classes Tuesday following the unexpected death of a teacher.

According to a letter from Superintendent Jake Langlais, math teacher Tim Strohm died on Friday from an unexpected and sudden medical event. Langlais called Strohm’s death “a great loss.”

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Students were back in the classroom Wednesday in the Madeira City Schools district after classes were canceled Tuesday to honor a beloved elementary principal.

Chris Flanagan died unexpectedly Monday at Jewish Hospital.

Madeira police Lt. Paul Phillips was a close friend. He called Flanagan’s death “devastating,” adding the 50-year-old was an enormous part of the community.

OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – Marion County Public Schools students and staff are mourning the loss of a teacher who died in a vehicle accident near the school where he worked.

School district officials confirmed Lake Weir High School teacher John Gibb died in a crash on Tuesday morning just down the road from the high school.

State troopers say the crash happened around 8 a.m. on County Road 464. Gibb was heading west in his SUV near Oak Road when he suffered a medical event.

He lost control, went over the grass median, and across the eastbound lanes. The vehicle then struck a sign, a fence, and a tree. Gibb was taken to the hospital where he died.

A well-loved religious studies teacher in Australia died at his desk despite three of his colleagues desperately trying to save him.

James Kiernan collapsed behind his desk at Shalom College in Bundaberg, Queensland, after arriving at around 7:30am on Tuesday. Colleagues rapidly performed CPR on the father-of-three before paramedics arrived, but he sadly died at the scene. Principal Dan McMahon confirmed James’ death at 10:50am, by which time his wife had arrived to be by his side as he died.

The Holy Spirit High School family is in mourning after the sudden death of a popular teacher and an alumna of the school. Kathleen Villano, a 1973 graduate of Holy Spirit and a Ventnor resident died suddenly on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 68.

The leader of Temple University suddenly died Tuesday after falling ill at a memorial service, officials at the Philadelphia school said.

Acting President JoAnne A. Epps, 72, was attending a memorial for Charles L. Blockson of the school’s Blockson Afro-American Collection of Black American art and artifacts when she became ill, the school said in a statement.

MARIA STEIN -The Marion Local Schools community is mourning the loss of longtime high school science teacher Todd Ashbaugh, 54, who died suddenly on Wednesday morning.

His cause of death has not been revealed.

Ashbaugh of Coldwater was in his 24th year as a chemistry and physics teacher and bus driver at Marion Local. He was also the district’s former track and football coach.

A Shawnee Mission North staff member was found dead in her home late last week, according to a message sent to families.

Kenna Kobin, an instructional coach at the school, was found deceased on Friday, Sept. 29, according to an email SM North Principal David Ewers sent families on Sunday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The YMCA of Greater Birmingham says a trainer passed away while teaching a class on Monday, July 10.

Russell Lee was teaching an evening fitness class at the Shades Valley location when he suffered a heart attack and died.

Before his passing, Lee had worked at the YMCA since 1992. He taught group classes at both the Downtown and Shades Valley locations.

He also worked at the Birmingham Public Library. A representative for the library said he was 54 years old and sent WBRC Fox 6 a statement reading:

“The Birmingham Public Library is devastated by the death of Russell Lee, who faithfully served our patrons for over 20 years. His passion for teaching fitness to our patrons made him beloved by all. Please pray for his family, coworkers, and friends.”

GREENSBORO — Northwest Guilford High students and staff are grieving the loss of longtime teacher and coach Paul Egleston.

Counselors are at the campus today as news of his death was shared with co-workers, classes, teams and others in the school community.

Egleston was found dead shortly after 5 p.m. Monday at his house in North Topsail Beach. Just two days ago, he had posted photos on Facebook of his scenic views of the sand and surf there.

The cause of death is being investigated. North Topsail Beach police are not releasing details at this time, Captain Andrew Page said on Tuesday morning.

A middle school coach and teacher at Devine Independent School District died suddenly of a heart attack after collapsing in front of his students early in January.

Jacob Sanchez, age 35, of Bigfoot, Texas died on Thursday, January 5, 2023.

According to reports, Sanchez suddenly collapsed at the start of class.

He was promptly given CPR by the staff members, but unfortunately, they were unable to save him.

An autopsy has been performed on a longtime Algonquin middle school teacher who died on Sunday and the coroner says foul play is not suspected in her death.

Heineman Middle School Principal Stephanie Mitchell last weekend sent a letter to the parents of Heineman Middle School notifying them about the death of Heather Frederick.

Frederick was the school’s physical education department leader and teacher.

Frederick was a part of the Huntley District 158 community for 21 years.

McHenry County Coroner Michael Rein said on Thursday that Frederick, 48, died at her residence in Marengo on Sunday.

An elementary school teacher at Naval Air Facility Atsugi has died, a spokeswoman for Department of Defense Education Activity’s Pacific region said Tuesday.

Nathan Rogers, a second grade teacher at Shirley Lanham Elementary, was “a loved and respected teacher, colleague, and friend,” according to a letter to students, faculty and parents provided to Stars and Stripes by spokeswoman Miranda Ferguson.

“It is with deep sadness I share with you this morning that one of our Lanham Elementary School teachers, Mr. Rogers, died over the weekend,” principal Jesus Calderon wrote in the letter, a copy of which was posted on the school’s Facebook page. “As a school community, we are grieving this immense loss.”

Calderon did not mention the cause of Rogers’ death and Ferguson in a separate email said she had no further information to share.

Beloved son, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend.  Born and raised in Michigan, David was a lifelong musician, avid angler, outdoorsman, and dedicated educator.  A graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a degree in education, David’s dedication to his students–first in the San Francisco Bay area, and later in Helena–was absolute.  David passed his lifelong love of science on to his students in the classroom, on extraordinary field-trips, and countless after-school activities.  His honors and awards were too numerous to list.

George Williams Sawyer, Jr. – “Tom”- died suddenly of a cardiac event at his home on the morning of Sunday November 12, 2023. Beloved teacher and coach, devoted friend and mentor, and ultimate family man, Tom meant the world to all who knew him. Tom was born in Portland, Maine on May 4, 1969 to Nancy (Kean) and George Williams Sawyer. He had an eager spirit, keen eye, and the will to amuse.

Arthur Leeth, a renowned ballet dancer, teacher, and music librarian, left behind a legacy of artistic excellence and passion when he passed away on November 14, 2023. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Leeth began his vocational training as a music major before receiving a scholarship in the dance department at Butler University. With a career spanning over 40 years at the Boston Ballet, he danced lead roles in classical, contemporary, and neoclassical ballets, managed the music library, and taught ballet classes. At the age of 70, Leeth died of a heart attack at his home in Boston, surrounded by loved ones. His remarkable contributions to the world of ballet will forever be remembered.
